The Republic of Cyprus has submitted targeted proposals in support of the implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution on Gaza in the framework of the first meeting of the Peace Board that was held in Washington.
According to a press release by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos took part in the inaugural meeting of the Gaza Peace Board on 19 February. The Republic of Cyprus participated with observer status.
The meeting was attended by 14 other EU member states while the European Commission was represented by Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Suica. It focused on the presentation of the next steps and monitoring mechanisms for the implementation of the Peace Agreement and President Trump's Plan, as adopted by the United Nations Security Council with Resolution 2803.
Before the meeting, the Republic of Cyprus submitted targeted proposals following up on the six-point document of President of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides, in support of the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2803.
The press release says that a document of feasible options for complementary assistance in four areas was submitted. The four areas are 1. humanitarian assistance through the Amaltheia Project, 2. early recovery, restoration of critical infrastructure and reconstruction, 3. provision of security training in cooperation with relevant EU missions and 4. operational support to the International Stabilization Force.
Regarding the sustainable enhancement of early recovery, a special joint document was submitted with the UN partner agencies (UNOPS). In addition, a separate proposal for a contribution to the International Stabilization Force was also presented with six options.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Foreign Affairs held a number of contacts with his counterparts and other involved officials from the participating countries. During the contacts, he underlined the importance of continuing coordinated international efforts to promote stability and security in the region.
He also highlighted the constructive role that the Republic of Cyprus can continue to play, both due to its geographical proximity and through the initiatives it has developed since the beginning of the crisis in Gaza, the press release concludes.
