Nicosia has won an important international distinction, as it is declared as the Best Cultural Destination in Europe for 2026 by the European Best Destinations (EBD) institution, according to a press release issued by the Nicosia Municipality.
This first place, the Municipality noted, marks a dynamic start to the new year and confirms the city’s steady path towards international cultural recognition and its emergence as a new hospitality destination.
The distinction, it is added, comes from the annual evaluation of the European Best Destinations, which is based both on the judgment of an international committee of cultural experts and on public participation. Over 22,000 travelers from 131 countries evaluated Europe’s top cultural destinations, with Nicosia winning the highest overall score of 18.6/20, placing it at 1st place.
According to the organizers, Nicosia stood out for the unique coexistence of rich historical heritage and contemporary artistic creation, for the authenticity of its cultural atmosphere, but also for its vibrant and evolving cultural scene. Particular reference is made to the distinctive character of the last divided capital of Europe, as well as to the hospitality and Mediterranean pulse of the city.
"This international recognition strengthens Nicosia's position on the European and global cultural map and confirms the Municipality's strategy for the emergence of the capital as a modern, sustainable and open cultural destination, with respect for the past and investment in the present and the future," it said.
The Municipality of Nicosia expressed its gratitude to all cultural bodies, organizations, creators and citizens who contribute daily to the shaping of the city's cultural identity and says it is committed to continuing to support actions and initiatives that enhance culture and quality of life.
The top ten of Europe's top cultural cities for 2026 also include the cities of Florence, Vienna, Leuven, Šibenik, Verona, Tomar, Rouen, Oxford and Graz, the press release said.
