Bank of Cyprus issues warning over fake profiles on social networking platforms

The Bank of Cyprus has announced that multiple fake profiles have recently been identified on the social networking platform Threads, which use the name and photo of the Bank's CEO, Panicos Nicolaou, presenting him as providing alleged investment advice or promoting investment opportunities.

In an announcement, the Bank of Cyprus categorically clarifies that:

  • The CEO does not provide investment advice via social media.
  • The Bank of Cyprus never asks the public for personal data, passwords or amounts of money through social networking platforms.
  • Any such posting or communication does not originate from Bank of Cyprus and is misleading.

The Bank of Cyprus calls on the public to:

  • Ignore and not interact with such profiles or posts.
  • Not undertake any financial transactions or share personal information.
  • Report fake profiles on the social networking platform immediately.
  • Always confirm any information through the official channels of the Bank of Cyprus.

The Bank has already taken the necessary actions towards the competent platforms, it notes in its announcement, adding, "The protection of customers and the public from fraud is a top priority for Bank of Cyprus."
