CESRA: New body representing electricity suppliers makes dynamic entrance to institutional energy landscape

The Cyprus Electricity Suppliers' Representatives Association (CESRA) has given an official presentation of its aims and priorities.

The presentation took place during a period when Cyprus is facing critical decisions for the transition to a modern, competitive electricity market.

As those attending the presentation heard, CESRA was founded to ensure clear rules, genuine competition, and full alignment with European Union energy standards, acting as an institutional interlocutor with the State and energy regulatory authorities.

At the presentation, CSERA highlighted its priorities, which include:

  • Strengthening transparency in the electricity market,

  • Ensuring market stability mechanisms,

  • Equal access for all participants,

  • Consumer protection, and

  • The integration of renewable energy sources (RES), storage, and smart energy mechanisms.

Special emphasis was placed on the need to eliminate deviations and delays that have previously undermined competition and the uninterrupted functioning of the market.

During the conference, CESREA’s leadership outlined the role and contributions the association intends to make in the new energy reality.

The President of CESRA George Theodotou, stated that its launch marks the start of a targeted, evidence-based, and consistent effort to enhance operational maturity in the electricity market.

"Our aim is to ensure transparency, stability and healthy competition, prerequisites for a market that operates for the benefit of both the economy and consumers,” Theodotou said.

The General Secretary of CESRA, Fanos Karantonis, said, “Suppliers play a critical role in market liquidity and balancing, cost reduction and the integration of RES and storage. CESRA is committed to promoting clear rules, technological modernisation and equitable access, and will participate institutionally in every regulatory process to combat distortions and strengthen market reliability.”

The CESRA presentation also signified the entry of a new, institutionally structured body that aspires to make a substantive contribution to shaping a modern, competitive, and EU-harmonised energy framework for Cyprus.

Cyprus launched its competitive electricity market on 1 October 2025, aiming to liberalise the sector and allow consumers to choose their electricity supplier, with an expectation of improved pricing and integration of renewable energy sources.
