House Speaker and new Czech Ambassador express will to strengthen bilateral cooperation

House Speaker Annita Demetriou and the new Czech Ambassador to Cyprus, Jana Hybášková, have highlighted the friendly relations between the two countries and their common will to further strengthen cooperation, particularly at the parliamentary level.

This was during their meeting on Tuesday, 2 December on the occasion of the Hybášková's assumption of office.

According to a House statement, Demetriou expressed her appreciation for the principled stance maintained by the Czech Republic on the Cyprus problem and the efforts to resolve it, based on international law, the relevant United Nations Security Council Resolutions and European principles and values. Referring to current developments, she underlined the Greek Cypriot side's commitment to the aim to resume negotiations to achieve a solution that will reunify Cyprus, stressing that the illegal Turkish invasion and continuing occupation will never be legitimized.

She also expressed her hope that the next meeting between the President of the Republic and the Turkish Cypriot leader, with the participation of the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General, would yield tangible results in this direction and noted that the Republic of Cyprus is making use of all European and international steps to strengthen efforts to resume substantive talks.

On her part, the Czech Ambassador stressed the key role that the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, can play in achieving progress and successfully concluding negotiations on the next Multiannual Financial Framework.

She also noted the catalytic role of the Republic of Cyprus as a factor for peace, security, and stability in the region, pointing out that Cyprus, due to its geopolitical position, can contribute significantly to a deeper understanding of the European Union regarding developments in the wider Middle East and to the EU taking a more active role in the region through enhanced dialogue and cooperation.

Finally, views were exchanged on issues of international interest, the announcement concludes.
