CSC welcomes Cyprus’ successful re-election to the IMO Council

The Cyprus Shipping Chamber has congratulated the Cyprus Shipping Deputy Ministry and all members of the delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus and the Cyprus High Commission in the UK, on the successful re-election of Cyprus as a Member of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council for a further two-year term.

A relevant announcement from the Chamber noted that the re-election took place during the IMO General Assembly held on Friday, 28 November 2025, in London.

"Cyprus has been a Member of the IMO since 1978 and has served on the IMO Council since 1987. Its continuous re-election, along with its rise from 12th to 7th place among 26 candidate countries in this year’s election process, represents a significant achievement and reflects the international maritime community’s continued trust in Cyprus as a leading maritime nation," the announcement said.

It also noted that, "This year’s re-election comes at a particularly important moment, as Cyprus prepares to assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, for the first half of 2026, further enhancing the country’s role and influence in shipping matters. Through its participation in the IMO Council, Cyprus will continue to contribute actively to the formulation of global shipping policy, address common global challenges and support a harmonised approach to maritime regulation, while safeguarding the interests of Cyprus Shipping worldwide."
