Εnergy and competitiveness high on Cyprus' EU Presidency agenda, Minister says

Energy security and competitiveness will be high on the priorities of the Cyprus EU Presidency which begins 1 January, Energy Minister George Papanastasiou said, addressing the annual General Assembly of the Famagusta Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

He said that Cyprus wants to safeguard a diversified, reliable and sustainable energy supply, which strengthens Europe’s resilience and its international position, without leaving any citizen or business behind.

Papanastasiou noted that the Cyprus Presidency will promote a pragmatic approach that links decarbonisation with the competitiveness of European industry, supporting clean technologies, faster licensing and investment-friendly regulatory frameworks.

Referring to Cyprus entrepreneurship, Energy Minister said that the government is actively supporting the business sector and promotes policies and grant schemes for innovation, energy and digital upgrading, manufacturing and sustainable development.

He added that in this context, the Ministry has secured a total of €363 million from EU funds for 2021-2027.

The Minister furthermore said that green transition is high in the new Policy Document for competitiveness of the Energy Ministry for 2025-2030.

He also referred to measures taken for reducing energy costs in the business sector and for facilitating investments in RES.
