Cyprus to join intergovernmental initiative with Greece and Italy to create AI Gigafactories

Greek and Cypriot officials met in Athens to discuss deepening cooperation in social policy and digital transition, with the Deputy Ministry of Research and Innovation revealing that Cyprus will be joining an intergovernmental initiative with Greece and Italy for the creation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Gigafactories.

The coordinators of the 3rd Greece–Cyprus Intergovernmental Summit that took place this week in Athens, Deputy Minister to the President Irene Piki and Minister of State of the Hellenic Republic Akis Skertsos, had a meeting with Cyprus’ Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Nicodemos Damianou, and Greece’s Minister of Digital Governance, Dimitris Papastergiou.

The discussion focused on strengthening cooperation between the two countries in the fields of social policy and digital transition, as well as improving the regulatory environment and reducing administrative burdens, in line with European objectives for Better Regulation, the Deputy Ministry of Research said in a social media post.

Extensive talks were held on issues relating to the prevention and tackling of domestic violence, and the operation of support structures such as the “House of Women” and the “House of the Child”, while particular emphasis was placed on protecting minors from digital addiction.

The two sides agreed to promote the European-wide deployment of digital age-verification and parental-control tools, such as the Greek “Kids Wallet” application, and to further expand their cooperation on digital governance and the interoperability of public services.

“Finally, the strategic role of Greece and Cyprus as regional hubs for technology and innovation was highlighted, and it was agreed that Cyprus will participate in a joint intergovernmental initiative with Greece and Italy for the creation of AI Gigafactories,” the post concluded.
