Trade deficit up in first nine months of the year, on an annual basis

Cyprus' trade deficit in January–September 2025 has recorded an increase compared to the corresponding period of 2024.

According to CySTAT, the trade deficit was €5,884.2m in January–September 2025 compared to €4,787.0m in the corresponding period of 2024.

It adds that total imports of goods in September 2025 were €1,208.0m as compared to €986,3m in September 2024, recording an increase of 22.5%. Imports from other EU Member States were €612.5m and from third countries €595.5m, compared to €633.6m and €352.7m respectively in September 2024. Imports in September 2025 include the transfer of economic ownership of vessels, with total value of €35.6m as compared to €30.4m in September 2024.

Total exports of goods in September 2025 were €497.4m as compared to €354.1m in September 2024, recording an increase of 40.5%. Exports to other EU Member States were €173.6m and to third countries €323,.8m, compared to €113.3m and €240.8m respectively in September 2024. Exports in September 2025 include the transfer of economic ownership of vessels, with total value of €108.0m as compared to €42.2m in September 2024.

Total imports of goods in January–September 2025 amounted to €10,111.1m as compared to €8,768.0m in January–September 2024, recording an increase of 15.3%. Total exports of goods in January-September 2025 were €4,226.9m compared to €3,981.0m in January-September 2024, registering an increase of 6.2%.

The trade deficit was €5,884.2m in January–September 2025 compared to €4,787.0m in the corresponding period of 2024.

August 2025, final data

Meanwhile, total imports of goods amounted to €1,116.7m in August 2025 as compared to €981.8m in August 2024, recording an increase of 13.7%. 

Exports of domestically produced products, including stores and provisions for ships and aircraft, were €399.1m in August 2025 as compared to €193.9m in August 2024, recording an increase of 105.8%.

Domestic exports of industrial products, excluding stores and provisions for ships and aircraft, were €392.6m in August 2025 compared to €186.4m in August 2024. Domestic exports of agricultural products, excluding stores and provisions for ships and aircraft, were €5.8m in August 2025 compared to €6.8m in August 2024.

Exports of foreign products, including stores and provisions for ships and aircraft, were €132.4m in August 2025 as compared to €96,9m in August 2024, recording an increase of 36.6%.

Main categories of exports of domestically produced goods for the period January-August 2025 (excl. stores and provisions for ships and aircraft), were mineral fuels and oils with value €1,667.6m, halloumi cheese with €262.9m and pharmaceutical products with €228.9m.
