Transport Minister, Alexis Vafeadis, is attending the fourth Summit of the European Union and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in Santa Maria, Colombia.
The Minister is representing the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides.
According to a Ministry's Press release, the 9 and 10 November Summit is the most significant mechanism of political dialogue and strategic consultation between the two regions. It also notes that the importance of this Summit lies on the fact that it brings together two large regions of the world, "which share common fundamental values, such as democracy, multilateral dialogue and respect for international law." The Summit, the Ministry it adds, reinforces economic relations, cooperation in the face of worldwide challenges, energy transition, digital reform and food security.
Among the Summit's priority topics is the three-fold transition (energy, digital and environmental), self-sufficiency in the health sector and equal access to medicines, sustainable agriculture and food security, gender equality, expansion of bi-regional trade and combating cross-border organised crime.
"The participation of the Republic of Cyprus at the Summit underlines the importance that our country attaches to strengthening dialogue and cooperation between Europe and Latin America, on the basis of mutual respect, common values and multilateralism," the Ministry's announcement concludes.
