"Cyprus is transforming — digitally!" the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation & Digital Policy posted on its social media, referring to the island's success at the European Digital Connectivity Awards 2025 this month, where it was declared a Champion in addressing the digital divide in rural and remote areas.
Cyprus' project Towards Universal Digital Inclusion: Nationwide Rollout of Very High-Capacity Networks in Rural Areas (Cyprus) won 1st Prize in the "Champion in Addressing the Digital Divide in Rural and Remote Areas" category.

"Funded with €35 million by the Republic of Cyprus and implemented by CYTA, the project is expected to be completed in early 2026, ensuring equal access to fast and reliable internet for every citizen, in every corner of Cyprus," the Deputy Ministry said in its post.
At an event in Brussels, the European Commission awarded three outstanding initiatives that are making a real impact in advancing high-speed digital connectivity across Europe.
Projects from across Europe, each dedicated to delivering very high-capacity connectivity to citizens, applied for the European Digital Connectivity Awards 2025.
The awards, celebrating the most innovative and impactful projects that are shaping Europe’s digital future, were delivered as follows:
Category 1: Excellence and innovation in deployment of Gigabit-Ready Infrastructure
- Hola 5G Oulu (Finland)
Category 2: Champions in addressing digital divide in rural and remote areas
- Towards Universal Digital Inclusion: Nationwide Rollout of Very High-Capacity Networks in Rural Areas (Cyprus)
Category 3: Cross-border and international connectivity
- East West Gate (Czech Republic, Germany, Poland & Ukraine)
