How old is “the Old Continent,” really? Europe, once the teacher of economics, philosophy, and innovation to the world, is now looking for its own compass.
Between green dreams, fiscal discipline, and global uncertainty, the continent finds itself walking a tightrope — trying to move forward without losing its balance. At this year’s Limassol Economic Forum (24 October 2025, Parklane Resort & Spa), the session “Europe’s Economy in Transition” aims to do more than analyze numbers. It dares to ask: Can Europe rediscover its voice in a world that no longer plays by its rules?
Caught between green ambition, fiscal restraint, and global turbulence, Europe is searching for a new rhythm — and perhaps, a new economic identity — at the Limassol Economic Forum.
From Boom to Rethink: Europe’s Turning Point
The age of pure neoliberalism seems like a distant memory. Globalization is being rewritten, trade wars and tariffs are back in fashion, and the word “protectionism” no longer sounds taboo. Europe stands in the middle of it all — eyes turned toward Washington, Beijing, and, of course, Brussels. Can it remain competitive without abandoning its social model? Can it foster growth without losing fiscal control? And can it keep the “Green Deal” alive when the energy bills are burning hotter than the planet?
When Experience Takes the Stage
In this session, two seasoned policymakers who have lived through economic storms — and survived them — bring their experience to the table. Christos Staikouras, former Minister of Finance of Greece and Professor at the Athens University of Economics and Business, and Harris Georgiades, former Minister of Finance of Cyprus and Chairman of the Clerides Institute, know exactly what it means to make tough choices under pressure. Their stories are not about theory — they’re about reality: the sleepless nights of crisis management, the delicate balance between politics and numbers, and the courage to reform when the alternative is collapse.
Guiding the discussion is Yousef Gamal El-Din, the sharp and charismatic host of “You’re in Business” and ex-anchor at Bloomberg Television, known for his ability to ask the right questions — and the hard ones. Expect a lively, honest, and unapologetically real conversation — the kind of economic talk that actually keeps you listening.
The Green Gamble
At the heart of the debate lies one of Europe’s defining challenges: the Green Transition. Has Europe gone too far, too fast? The continent that once led the sustainability agenda now faces an uncomfortable truth — that ambition comes at a cost, and sometimes that cost is competitiveness.
As factories move eastward and energy security wobbles, the question becomes:
Can Europe turn its green ideals into a growth engine rather than a weight to carry?
Innovation, technology, and industrial policy will decide the answer.
Because the Green Deal must be more than a slogan — it must make economic sense.
Who’s Steering Europe’s Economy?
The debate about Europe’s future is really a debate about who’s in control.
Is it governments, markets, or citizens? Or perhaps tech giants and new institutions that move faster than Brussels can regulate? As one might note: “Europe doesn’t need another vision — it needs a plan that actually works.” And maybe, that’s the most European statement of all.
Limassol: Where Europe’s Next Chapter Begins
The Limassol Economic Forum has become much more than a regional event — it’s a front-row seat to global transformation. This year, the “Europe’s Economy in Transition” session promises a conversation that’s part strategy, part reality check, and part inspiration. Because in today’s world, economics isn’t just about numbers — it’s about resilience, creativity, and the courage to adapt. And if Europe is to write its next chapter, it will have to do it with a mix of all three.
At Limassol, that journey begins — not in the corridors of power, but in the conversations that dare to question it.
