ERATOSTHENES CoE concludes landmark project in AI and Earth Observation

The ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence has announced the completion of the research project AI-OBSERVER, which harnessed Artificial Intelligence to enhance Earth Observation capabilities for Disaster Risk Reduction.

In a press release it says that, funded under the Horizon Europe Twinning programme, the project was implemented through a strategic partnership of the Centre with leading institutions: the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), the University of Rome Tor Vergata (UNITOV), and the Cypriot company CELLOCK Ltd.

The AI-OBSERVER project, which started in October 2022 and concludes on 30 September 2025, has been a milestone for the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence, it adds.

Coordinated by Prof. Diofantos Hadjimitsis, with Dr. Marios Tzouvaras serving as Project Manager on behalf of ERATOSTHENES, the project was carried out with the contribution of distinguished scientists, Dr. Gerd Reis (DFKI), Prof. Fabio Del Frate (UNITOV), and Dr. Haris Zacharatos (CELLOCK).

"It has significantly strengthened the scientific excellence and innovation capacity of the Centre through capacity-building activities in Artificial Intelligence for Earth Observation applications in Disaster Risk Reduction, as well as specialised training in research management and administration" it says.

In collaboration with its partners, ERATOSTHENES developed advanced AI technologies for monitoring and assessing multiple environmental hazards in Cyprus, including earthquakes, landslides, coastal erosion, fires, floods, and marine pollution, along with a dedicated platform. The results were presented on Friday, 19 September 2025, at the project’s final workshop held at the Limassol Municipality Blue Innovation Centre.

The event was attended by more than 40 representatives from academia, the public sector, industry, and the wider public, offering ERATOSTHENES researchers the opportunity to present and disseminate the project’s results to a broad audience.

The workshop concluded with an open discussion among participants, aimed at exploring further collaboration and ensuring that the project’s results continue to be utilised even beyond its completion, the press release concludes.
