Christodoulides and Li Qiang discuss deepening Cyprus-China cooperation in the sectors of investment, trade, shipping and tourism (video)

The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, referred to the strategic relationship between Cyprus and China during his meeting with the Prime Minister, Head of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, Li Qiang.

During the meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, Christodoulides also expressed special appreciation for China's consistent support and principled positions on the Cyprus issue.

In a written statement, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis states that during the meeting the two leaders reaffirmed the very good level of bilateral relations and expressed their common will to further deepen cooperation between the two countries, with emphasis on the sectors of investment, trade, shipping, tourism, education and culture.

During the meeting, Letymbiotis adds, the President of the Republic stated that "we greatly value our strategic relationship with China, a relationship that has matured over the years and is based on mutual understanding and our shared commitment to the principles of the UN Charter and international law."

He added that both countries are in favor of multilateralism, especially in these very difficult times, while noting that he looks forward to his visit to China.

According to the Government Spokesperson, President Christodoulides also expressed special appreciation for China's consistent support and principled positions on the Cyprus issue, especially within the UN Security Council, noting that China, as a Permanent Member of the Security Council, has a very important role to play not only in the resumption of negotiations but also in the resolution of the Cyprus issue on the basis of UN Security Council resolutions.

At the same time, he reiterated the Republic of Cyprus's firm, timeless commitment to the "One China" policy.

They also exchanged views on international and regional developments, including the situation in the Middle East and Ukraine, Letymbiotis notes.

He also points out that the President of the Republic stressed that Cyprus will continue to work actively for the development of cooperative relations between the European Union and China on the basis of a positive agenda, pointing out that the upcoming assumption by the Republic of Cyprus of the Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2026 will constitute an important opportunity to further strengthen EU-China dialogue and cooperation.
