Laiki Bank 'haircut' depositors to receive a further €44.36m

The Ministry of Finance announced that replenishment payments totaling €44.36 million have been disbursed to 4,524 additional eligible individuals under the Partial Replenishment Scheme of the National Solidarity Fund.

The second batch of replenishment payments has been processed, for eligible individuals, who had submitted an application through the “Partial Replenishment Scheme of the National Solidarity Fund” by 13 August 2025, and whose application details had been verified.

The Ministry of Finance said that it will continue to make replenishment payments at regular intervals, aiming to ensure the timely and fair service of all eligible natural persons.

In a post on X, President Nikos Christodoulides described the payment of compensations as a “clear indication of the political will and consistency with which the government fulfills its commitments to the people of Cyprus.”

Government Spokesman, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, stressed that the payments have already been routed to the Central Bank, noting that “the disbursement of the amounts is not merely a technical procedure, but a clear indication of the political will and consistency with which the Government implements the decisions of the Cabinet and supports in practice the citizens who were affected.”

He added that the process is proceeding smoothly according to plan, so that all beneficiaries who have confirmed their details will receive the compensation they are entitled to. At the same time, he urged those who have not yet registered their information on the electronic platform to do so immediately, in order to confirm the amounts they lost due to the 2013 haircut.

The Ministry of Finance reminded the affected natural persons who submitted an application through the  electronic service  «Participation in the Replenishment Scheme of National Solidarity Fund» during the period from 20/12/2023 to 25/5/2024, and who have not yet proceeded with the confirmation/verification of their application details, that the deadline for submitting their electronic application is Tuesday, September 30,2025.

In 2013, an unprecedented bail-in (“haircut”) was imposed on depositors in Cyprus during the financial crisis. Deposits exceeding €100,000 at Bank of Cyprus were forcibly converted into equity, while Laiki Bank was resolved. The measure, agreed with international lenders as part of the island’s bailout program, led to substantial financial losses for thousands of individuals and businesses.
