National and Kapodistrian University of Athens to open branch in Cyprus

Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis has described the approval of the certification of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens programme for the operation of a branch in Cyprus as the beginning of a new era for higher education in the country.

In his statements, Letymbiotis also indicated that, for the first time, the way is being opened for the operation of overseas university branches in Cyprus.

"The oldest and largest University in Greece, with a history dating back to 1837, received certification to operate under specific conditions, inaugurating a development with institutional, political and developmental weight but also with particular value for our indissoluble ties with Greece," he said.

"This is the first University branch that will operate in our country, opening new horizons and consolidating the strategy that we have developed as a Government for the internationalization of higher education," Letymbiotis pointed out.

According to the Government Spokesperson, the government, through the design and implementation of the legislative regulation, made possible a development that is not simply an isolated event, but the foundation of a new chapter for the academic and research reality of the country.

"Our strategy for the internationalisation of higher education is now taking on tangible form, with Cyprus further strengthening its position on the international academic map and becoming a pole of attraction for students, academics and researchers," Letymbiotis noted.

He added that the operation of the branch of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, an emblematic and leading University in which thousands of Cypriot male and female students have been educated for two centuries and continue to be educated to this day, is not only the first step but also the symbolic beginning of a new institutional framework that creates prospects for the emergence of other University branches in our country.

"This is a significant milestone in the further transformation of our country into a regional center of higher education, with multiplier benefits for society, the economy and our international image," the Government Spokesman continued.

He continued that it is also further proof of the trust that higher education has earned in Cyprus, as in addition to the very good universities that are already operating, the country is now a magnet for top universities abroad.

"It is clear that the Government's strategy in the field of higher education has multiplier benefits for the entire Cypriot society," Konstantinos Letymbiotis emphasised.
