Unemployment in Cyprus fell in the second quarter of 2025, according to the Labour Force Survey published by the Statistical Service of Cyprus (Cystat). The jobless rate dropped to 4.3% from 4.6% in the same quarter last year, with the number of unemployed decreasing to 22,663 from 23,760.
The labour force reached 528,981 people, representing 65.4% of the population, up from 511,423 a year earlier. Men accounted for 71.1% of the labour force and women for 60%.
Employment rose to 506,318, pushing the employment rate to 62.6% (68.3% for men and 57.2% for women), compared with 62.0% a year ago. Among people aged 20–64, the employment rate stood at 81.7%, while for those aged 55–64 it was 71.5%.
By sector, Services remained dominant, employing 81.2% of workers, followed by Industry at 16.6% and Agriculture at 2.2%. Compared with last year, Services showed a slight decline, while Industry posted a small increase.
Part-time employment accounted for 9.4% of total employment (47,425 people), up from 8.9% in Q2 2024. Gender disparities remain pronounced: 12.0% of women work part-time compared with 7.1% of men.
Youth unemployment remains high
Despite the overall improvement, unemployment among young people remains a concern. In the 15–24 age group, the unemployment rate stood at 14.9%, well above the national average, with 15.8% for young men and 13.9% for young women.
As for duration, 55.9% of job seekers were unemployed for less than six months, 23.0% for 6–11 months, while long-term unemployment dropped significantly to 21.1%, from 34.5% a year earlier.
