Cyprus to seek participation in EU SAFE financial instrument

The Cyprus National Defence Industry Council (NDIC) has reached an initial decision to pursue participation in the EU's SAFE financial instrument, following an extraordinary meeting held on 15 July at the Ministry of Defence.

The decision comes as a follow-up to a Cabinet’s meeting chaired by the President of the Republic, Nicos Christodoulides, on 10 July 2025.

According to a press release, issued by the Ministry of Defence, the main focus of the Council’s meeting was to brief its members on the rationale behind the decision, outline the next steps, and discuss the potential opportunities this initiative could generate for Cyprus’s defence industry.

The issue of Cyprus’s effective involvement in the SAFE instrument was also discussed at a previous NDIC session held on 2 June 2025. In addition, stakeholders from the national defence ecosystem were informed during a dedicated briefing session held on 22 May 2025.

The Ministry of Defence has actively participated in EU-level consultations that shaped the SAFE instrument, the press release says.
