The renovated and upgraded indoor 'Spyros Kyprianou' Athletic Center in Limassol is almost ready to be handed over to the state and the Cyprus sports sector.

The venue is where the heart of FIBA Eurobasket 2025 will "beat" in late August and early September.

This is a project that began at the beginning of last August and will be officially completed within a few days, with a total cost reaching €14.5 million.

The unveiling of the new face of the Spyros Kyprianou Athletic Center took place on the sidelines of the presentation of EKO Cyprus as the Main Event Sponsor of the event, in the presence, among others, of the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides.

It is noted that the amount required for the upgrade and renovation of the stadium was provided by the state by decision of the Council of Ministers, while as the President of the Republic revealed, there are already requests from teams from other countries to use it for a fee for their European and other obligations.

As InBusinessNews has been informed, the inauguration of the upgraded Limassol stadium will take place in early July, officiated by the President of the Republic.

According to the President of the Cyprus Basketball Federation (CBF), Andreas Mouzourides, the upgrade of 'Spyros Kyprianou' is a project that goes beyond the limits of a single organisation.

"The indoor stadium is becoming part of the national infrastructure, a tool for the development of sports and a pillar of our country's outward-looking approach," he emphasised.

It is worth noting that the process of completing the project was not easy, since - as Mouzourides explained - "We faced numerous challenges: Bureaucratic obstacles, time pressures, technical difficulties and unforeseeable factors. However, with perseverance, flexibility and coordination of all the bodies involved, we managed to overcome every obstacle."

"The contribution of the Department of Public Works, the contractor 'A&A Apostolides' and its people who worked tirelessly, even under pressure, to ensure that the project would be completed with quality and within tight deadlines was decisive," added the CBF President.

"The result certainly justifies all of our efforts. This is not a renovation. This is a comprehensive upgrade, which ensures modern facilities, increased hospitality capabilities, accessibility for all, but also an experience for the viewer," he further pointed out.

According to Mouzourides, the 'Spyros Kyprianou' Athletic Center "is a legacy for Cypriot sports. Ready, modern, with increased capacity, to host its greatest moments."

The projects that were carried out

It is noted that the projects at "Spyros Kyprianou" concerned the upgrading of the stadium's lighting, electricity, air conditioning, ventilation and sound systems, the installation of new cabling systems, technology, internet, etc., the complete renovation of the teams' locker rooms, as well as the partial renovation of all the halls and locker rooms that will be used for the event.

Regarding the stands, new stands were installed, which while the provisions existed, had never been placed to date, as well as the addition of some mobile stands. Also, additional emergency, security and accessibility exits would be created, in accordance with the updated legislation.
