Government welcomes youth unemployment reduction, “measures are paying off,” says Letymbiotis

The government's policy on the labour market, employment, and youth is paying off, said Government Spokesperson, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, in statements to the media at the Presidential Palace.

Speaking on 2 June, he referred to a sharp decline in youth unemployment and their increased participation in employment, which are “tangible results of the targeted policies implemented by the government.”

Letymbiotis said that according to official data by the Statistical Service, youth unemployment in the 15-24 age group fell by 37% in the first quarter of 2025, dropping to 9.9% from 15.7% in the corresponding period of 2024. In absolute terms, the number of unemployed young people fell by 2,025, from 5,221 to 3,196.

At the same time, he said, the employment rate for young people aged 15-24 in 2024 reached 35.4%, the highest performance since 2008, while the reduction in the number of young people aged 15-29 who are not in employment, education or training is also particularly encouraging.

Specifically, as Letymbiotis said, their number fell by 24.4% in one year, from 21,628 to 16,354, i.e. by 5,274 young people. The corresponding rate for 2024 stood at 12.9%, the lowest recorded since 2010.

“These figures confirm that the government's policy on the labour market, employment, and youth is delivering measurable results,” he noted.
