Trade deficit up an annual 18.9% in year’s first four months

The trade deficit in the first four months of 2025 was €2,613.7m, up €149.5m from that of the same period of 2024, despite a significant increase recorded in exports.

According to provisional data by CyStat, during this period, total imports of goods amounted to €4,356.9m as compared to €3,665.6m in January–April 2024, recording an increase of 18.9%. Total exports of goods in January-April 2025 were €1,743.2m compared to €1,201.4m in January-April 2024, registering a significant increase of 45.1%.

April imports up 4.4%; exports up 10.7%

Total imports of goods in April 2025 were €1,156m as compared to €1,106.8m in April 2024, recording an increase of 4.4%. Imports from other EU member states were €715.9m and from third countries €440.1m, compared to €661.3m and €445.5m respectively in April 2024. Imports in April 2025 include the transfer of economic ownership of vessels and aircraft, with total value of €142.6m as compared to €151m in April 2024.

Total exports of goods in April 2025 were €390m as compared to €352.4m in April 2024, recording an increase of 10.7%. Exports to other EU member states were €105.7m and to third countries €284.3m, compared to €109.7m and €242.7m respectively in April 2024. Exports in April 2025 include the transfer of economic ownership of vessels, with total value of €32.8m as compared to €38.2m in April 2024.

March imports up 23.5%; exports increase impressive 87.4%

CyStat also published the final data for foreign trade for March 2025 on. Total imports of goods amounted to €1,031.1m in March 2025 as compared to €828.1m in March 2024, recording an increase of 24.5%.

Exports of domestically produced products, including stores and provisions for ships and aircraft, were €283.4m in March 2025 as compared to €151.2m in March 2024, recording a significant increase of 87.4% as well.

Domestic exports of industrial products, excluding stores and provisions for ships and aircraft, were €271.7m in March 2025 compared to €140.1m in March 2024. Domestic exports of agricultural products, excluding stores and provisions for ships and aircraft, were €10.8m in March 2025 compared to €10.3m in March 2024.

Exports of foreign products, including stores and provisions for ships and aircraft, were €135.8m in March 2025 as compared to €111.9m in March 2024, recording an increase of 21.4%
