President had constructive meetings on joining the US' visa waiver programme

President Nikos Christodoulides said the meetings he had on 14 April with an inter-agency team from the United States were "absolutely constructive", in statmentes to the press ahead of the 15th Nicosia Economic Congress.

The delegation is visiting Cyprus this week to conduct a technical evaluation of the country’s security procedures, as part of the ongoing process of considering Cyprus’ potential inclusion in the United States Visa Waiver Program (VWP).

President Christodoulides was asked to comment on the presence of the American inter-agency team in Cyprus. He said that the meetings began yesterday and are continuing today, taking place at both a technocratic and political level.

“A significant visit, the results of which will lead to final announcements by the United States,” the President said, adding that “this is something we have been working toward for a long time. We believe such a decision holds important political and social dimensions, and I hope very soon—as I have been informed from a technocratic point of view, yesterday’s meetings were absolutely constructive, and we will see how today’s continue—the Americans will move forward with announcements. We await the completion of their meetings.”
