EMBIO Diagnostics and Charalambides Christis join O-CEI project to advance sustainable dairy production in Cyprus

EMBIO Diagnostics together with Charalambides Christis, proudly announce their participation in the O-CEI (Open CloudEdgeIoT Platform Uptake in Large Scale Cross-Domain Pilots) project, a pioneering HORIZON Europe initiative designed to drive energy efficiency and sustainability through IoT, AI, and edge computing technologies.

As part of this large-scale European effort, EMBIO Diagnostics, together with Charalambides Christis, are leading a pilot focused on reducing the energy footprint of dairy production. The initiative is focused on halloumi cheese, one of Cyprus’ most iconic exports. It is set to optimise resource use, cut energy costs, and enhance environmental sustainability within the dairy sector.

Dairy production is one of the most energy-intensive industries, with significant environmental challenges stemming from high energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. The Cyprus pilot, led by EMBIO and Charalambides Christis, integrates real-time energy monitoring solutions to improve efficiency at multiple production stages, from livestock farming to dairy processing.

The pilot combines advanced IoT sensors, AI-driven analytics, and sustainable energy solutions to revolutionise dairy production. EMBIO provides real-time monitoring technology, allowing producers to track energy consumption, livestock conditions, and production efficiency at every stage. By leveraging renewable energy sources such as solar power, the project aims to reduce reliance on traditional energy grids while ensuring operational stability. AI-powered models analyse energy patterns, enabling predictive decision-making that optimises production cycles and minimises waste. Additionally, IoT-enabled livestock monitoring helps improve animal welfare and productivity, reducing stress levels and ensuring optimal milk yield. These innovations collectively contribute to a more sustainable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly dairy production model that can be expanded beyond Cyprus to other regions facing similar challenges.

Marios Constantinou: Sustainability and profitability can go hand in hand

Marios Constantinou, Managing Director of Charalambides Christis Ltd, stated that the O-CEI project aligns with the company’s long-term vision of transitioning toward a more energy-efficient, environmentally friendly, and technologically advanced dairy production model. By participating in the project, Charalambides Christis will gain access to cutting-edge energy management, IoT monitoring, and AI-driven optimisation tools, will shape the future of dairy production in Cyprus but also will set an example for the entire Mediterranean dairy industry, proving that sustainability and profitability can go hand in hand.

O-CEI overarching goal is to pilot the imperative of accelerating the uptake and up-scaling of innovative Cloud-Edge-IoT solutions, strengthening Europe’s competitiveness and open strategic autonomy by orchestrating cross-domain data sharing, minimising energy footprint, stimulating multi-sided marketplaces, and promoting open standards for virtualisation and interoperability. For doing so, O-CEI will feed with such innovative technologies, and a comprehensive framework, to eight multidimensional real-world pilots implemented by 58 partners from 20 countries, framed in key strategic sectors: electricity grid, electromobility, software-defined vehicles, agrifood and agriculture, logistics and urban environments. It will swiftly create and implement innovative solutions across the cloud continuum; and effectively address the needs of existing and emerging individual and cross-sector business value chains.

As part of this broader initiative, the Cyprus dairy pilot demonstrates how Cloud-Edge-IoT solutions can transform traditional industries into more efficient and environmentally conscious operations. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, EMBIO aims to redefine industry standards, providing scalable solutions that can be implemented beyond Cyprus to enhance global dairy production.
