How the Takata airbag recall issue is progressing

Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Alexis Vafeadie, has informed the House Transport Committee on the progress of the issue that arose with the Takata airbags, in the presence of the Director of the Department of Road Transport, George Loucas.

The session was held behind closed doors, as requested by the Minister, and no statements were made after its conclusion.

As CNA has been informed, however, the issue is ongoing and two more meetings are expected with the Legal Service on the issue of issuing decrees that will concern the recall of vehicles with the problematic airbags.

According to the legislation passed by the Plenary of the Parliament on 16 December 2024, the Minister of Transport, by decree, which is published in the Official Gazette of the Republic, and which determines the withdrawal procedure, the time period for taking corrective measures, as well as the suspension of a certificate of suitability, in case of non-compliance with the corrective measures, as well as in case of withdrawal, which according to the distributor or the manufacturer's representative presents a serious risk to public health and safety.

The law comes into force on 3 February, when the first decree is expected to be issued.

Information indicates that over 80,000 vehicles are affected by recalls regarding both airbags and other vehicle parts.
