DepMin discusses EU-UK ties, EU Cyprus Presidency, bilateral relations in London

Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Rauna has paid a visit to London, following an invitation by Paymaster General, Minister for the Cabinet Office and Minister for the Constitution and European Union Relations Nick Thomas-Symonds.

She held meetings with Thomas-Symonds, as well as with the Ambassador of the European Union to the United Kingdom Pedro Serrano on 27 January, a statement said.

The meeting with the British Minister focused on EU-UK relations and bilateral relations. The two sides examined the prospects for further development and strengthening of EU-UK relations, in view of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, the first half of 2026.

They stressed the importance of implementing existing EU-UK agreements.

The Deputy Minister informed her British counterpart about the preparations underway for the Republic of Cyprus to assume the rotating Presidency and they exchanged views on EU-UK relations, which the Cyprus Presidency will be called upon to manage. The two sides expressed their readiness for close cooperation.

During the meeting with the EU Ambassador to the United Kingdom, EU-UK relations were also discussed. Raouna, the statement said, welcomed the mutual will to strengthen EU-UK relations and the momentum developed in recent months, as challenges of security and geopolitical stability have risen.

At the same time, she highlighted the important role of the EU Delegation to the UK and expressed her belief that cooperation would continue and be strengthened during the Cyprus Presidency.

In her statements to the media, she stated that the UK is a valuable partner and ally of the EU, particularly at a time when we are called upon to address significant common challenges in the field of security.

The DepMin noted that Cyprus’ aim, during its Presidency, is to work towards the implementation of existing agreements, to strengthen EU-UK relations, as well as to further develop them in mutually beneficial areas.

The Deputy Minister departed for Brussels, where she will participate in EU General Affairs Council 28 January.
