Turkey says Cyprus Navtex outside its jurisdiction

Turkey’s Defence Ministry said Cyprus’ Navtex notice for block 5 of its Exclusive Economic Zone lies outside Turkish maritime jurisdiction; though it confirmed it was closely monitoring activities in the area, Turkish media reported.

The news comes shortly after President Nikos Christodoulides announced the official launch of ExxonMobil and QatarEnergy’s drilling in the block.

The drilling site is approximately 22km south of Turkey’s claimed maritime boundaries, Turkish ministry sources are quoted as saying.

They added that Turkey would continue to defend its rights and interests, as well as those of occupied Cyprus, warning that any violations of their claimed continental shelf would be “immediately prevented in the field”.

“Our state knows more than anyone else. It evaluates the issue in all its dimensions and determines the steps that need to be taken. When the time comes, it will take these steps,” the sources said.
