We want to see the old Larnaca Airport developed, Transport Minister says

There is a great opportunity with the old airport in Larnaca, the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Alexis Vafeades, has said, adding that the government does not want the site to remain deserted any longer.

The Minister recently visited the premises of the old Larnaca Airport, with the President of the Larnaca Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ΕΒΕ) Nakis Antoniou and the Director of EBE, Charalambos Andreou, in order to see the state of the building and to discuss ways to exploit it.

In his statements to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), Vafeades said that "the aim of the visit to the old Larnaca airport premises was to see what prospects there are, what investments can be made in the area and what kind of development can be implemented."

In general, he continued, "we want to see what the next steps are and what actions the state should take in cooperation with Hermes to move forward and develop the area."

Asked whether there are any investors who have shown interest in developing the old Larnaca airport, the Minister replied that "from time to time there are various persons who have expressed interest in investing in this area, however, to date we have nothing concrete. We see a great opportunity here and we do not want the site to remain deserted for a longer period of time."

"We want to see immediate activity in the area and we think it is an opportunity that we have not taken advantage of and we need to do so" the Minister said.

On his part, Antoniou said that "the site of the old airport and its area is a huge property of the state and we can exploit it for the benefit of Larnaca and Cyprus in general."
