Cyprus 'technically ready' to enter the Schengen area in 2025, President says

President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides has said that in 2025 Cyprus will be technically ready to be part of the Schengen area.

“In 2025 we will be technically ready, we will have done everything we need to do, so that Cyprus can be part of Schengen,” President Christodoulides said during a discussion in the context of the recent “Beyond Sea and Sun” Conference organised by Hermes Airports in Nicosia.

The discussion focused on issues related to the development of the tourism industry. Replying to a question, President Christodoulides said that today, Cyprus is the only EU member state that is outside the Schengen area.

He noted that its accession will be important for both tourism and investment.

“We have addressed all political concerns  in relation to the ceasefire line and are now working on the technical details, in order to enter this category,”  the President said.  He recalled that a team was set up under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that is working on the matter.

The President also referred to the travel visa for the US, saying that we are in the final stage of the process to lift the travel visa requirement.

We expect, he added, a  team from the US Government to come to Cyprus adding that announcements will be made very soon.
