Kadis reportedly considered for Mediterranean and Environment portfolios

The portfolios for the Mediterranean and the Environment are the two potential choices for Kostas Kadis, proposed by Cyprus as the country’s next European Commissioner, according to a document about which Euronews first reported about and which the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) has also seen.
The document, which has been circulating among EPP members, outlines the names proposed by 25 member states (Germany is already covered by Ursula von der Leyen and Estonia is covered by future HRVP Kaja Kallas) and potential portfolios for each in the next Commission.
Kadis, described an independent in the document, is marked as potentially suited for the portfolios relating to the Mediterranean (which according to reports so far would include a range of bilateral relations with Middle Eastern countries with an emphasis on migration) and the Environment (related to his academic background).
Transport, which is a portfolio in which Cyprus was interested, is noted as a potential fit for Greece’s nominated Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas, along with Rural Development, as well as Finland’s Henna Virkkunen, along with Competitiveness and the Green Deal.
According to this document, the EPP would hold a majority of cabinet positions - a total of 14 - including Von der Leyen herself. Euronews pointed out in its story that the portfolios for Employment and Housing that were sought after by the Socialist & Democrats group are considered for Magnus Brunner (Austria) and Dubravka Šuica, both from the EPP.
