Historic day for Cyprus and its sport, President says on Kontides' silver medal

President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides said that it was a historic day for Cyprus and its sports, as Cypriot sailor Pavlos Kontides secured a silver medal at the Paris Olympic Games, the second Olympic medal in his career.

In a written statement, the President of the Republic on 7 August said that he wishes to express "the feelings of deep emotion and joy of the Cypriot people for the feat of our champion Pavlos Kontides, who once again raised Cypriot sport to the highest level of world sport".

"Pavlos Kontides made Cyprus proud and we are all deeply grateful for his great achievement," the President of the Republic concluded.

Kontides won a silver medal at the Paris Olympic Games, on 7 August finishing second in the ILCA 7 (Laser) race, thus securing Cyprus' first medal at the 33rd Olympic Games.

This was Kontides' second Olympic medal in his career as during the London 2012 Olympic Games he also won a silver medal, which was also Cyprus' first medal in the history of the Olympics.
