Cabinet approves progress report on the backlog of court cases

The annual progress report on the backlog of court cases which was compiled and submitted by the Supreme Court, has been approved by the Council of Ministers.

By the end of the first half of 2024, 55% of the cases had been heard or settled, while Cyprus' responsibility under the Recovery and Resilience Plan was to adjudicate 20% of the backlog cases by the end of June 2024, Minister of Justice and Public Order Marios Hartsiotis told the Press after the 23 August Cabinet meeting.

He also pointed out that within the framework of judicial reform and the Resilience and Recovery Plan, Cyprus has undertaken specific commitments towards Europe regarding the issue of backlogs.

He further said that the delayed cases before a court were those that had not been heard by 31 December, 2018.

Based on the Republic of Cyprus' commitment, in order for the Recovery and Resilience Plan to run smoothly, 20% of the backlog cases must be heard by the end of the first half of 2024, and 40% by the first half of 2026, he added.
