President says he is in consultations on EU Commissioner portfolio preferences

President Nikos Christodoulides has said he is in consultations with the President of the European Commission about which Commissioner's portfolio the Republic of Cyprus will claim, noting that he had two portfolios in mind.

On the sidelines of an event in Limassol on 30 June, and asked by a journalist about which European Commissioner portfolio the Republic of Cyprus would claim, President Christodoulides said that he has two portfolios in mind and that he has shared this with the President of the Commission.

“We are in consultations,” President Christodoulides said, noting that everything will depend on what happens after 18 July and the result of the session of the European Parliament. “We hope to have a positive conclusion so that we can start tackling all these problems that we face,” he said.

In response to a question, he said he did not wish to elaborate on which portfolios he was referring to.

He also said he had some names in mind but that he did not enter into this discussion with the President of the Commission. At the present stage we are discussing the portfolios, he said.
