CCCI exploring possibility of purchasing products for people in Gaza from Cypriot industries

The Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) has asked its members to show their interest in supplying products for the population in Gaza, as it explores possibilities of purchasing these products from Cypriot industries.

The Chamber said in a press release on 5 June that it has been briefed by the Cypriot Foreign Affairs Ministry on the operation of the Amalthea fund, set up in the framework of Nicosia’s initiative for a maritime humanitarian corridor from Cyprus to Gaza.

Officials from the Republic’s Treasury Office were present, the CCCI said in its press release, adding that money is donated to the Fund by states only and procedures are in place with the collaboration of UN organisations (ie UN's World Food Program) for the purchase of various products the population is in need for from both abroad and from the domestic market in Cyprus.

Currently, the products in need are mainly dry food (canned food, flour, pasta, nuts, coffee and general products that can be kept outside the refrigerator, not fresh such as halloumi, fish, cold cuts and not pork), items of household clothing (mattresses, pillows, sheets, face and bath towels, etc.), tents (without metal poles).

According to the CCCI the categories of products may change to include other items at a later stage and announcements will be made.

The Chamber will explore the possibilities of purchasing the above products from Cypriot industries, safeguarding that there is sufficiency of supplies in the domestic market and therefore prices will not change. CCCI has already informed its members asking them to show interest if they wish to supply these products, the press release noted.
