Ayia Napa Marina issues reactive statement for 16 June event involving burning yacht

Ayia Napa Marina has issued a reactive statement in connection to an event at the location on 16 June.

According to the statement by Costas Fitiris, Chief Marina Officer, on behalf of Ayia Napa Marina, on "Sunday, June 16, 2024, at 18:40 a 15 meters (LOA) Ukrainian owned yacht requested permission to enter Ayia Napa Marina, but upon entry it was found by the Marina's Control Room that there was smoke and evidence of fire inside the vessel.

The vessel was immediately isolated, and all occupants were rescued by Marina staff. An anti-polluting net was placed around the perimeter of the vessel to prevent other vessels from being endangered and firefighting was started by Marina staff and Marine Police personnel until the arrival of the Fire Department.

The local Fire Department responded with three vehicles and twelve firefighters. The fire inside the vessel had already spread due to the flammable materials and the vessel's fuel.

Despite the tremendous and diligent efforts of the Fire Department and Marina staff, the vessel, was completely destroyed. The accident is being investigated by the Fire Department and the Marine Police."
