House President: "The only way forward is to collaborate on and accelerate tech advances"

House President Annita Demetriou told stakeholders that working together to accelerate Cyprus' tech advancement is the only way forward for the country and its residents to prosper.

She was addressing the TechIsland Summit in Limassol, part of the Reflect Festival.

The House President noted that her presence, along with other parliamentary colleagues indicated that they were not interested only in legislation but also wanted to be part of the new era.

Demetriou said there was much to learn for Cyprus to have a more competitive economy and adapt to the necessities of the modern world.

Cyprus not only has a significant historical position but it can be a hub of tech and digitisation, she said.

"There is no other way but to collaborate and accelerate (technology advance)," she underlined.

She said that the public service needed help to transform and that this transformation would, in turn, assist society.

"We need to turn the vision of Cyprus as a tech island into a reality," she added, noting that the state could capitalise on the pool of experts attending the Summit.

"As a country," the House President, continued, "We need to give them (overseas tech experts relocating to Cyprus) everything they need to succeed. If they succeed, we are going to succeed as a country as well."

"We are here to listen to ideas and initiatives," Demetriou said, adding that she was positive that the new tech era would benefit society, while also creating better equality for all.
