Cyprus suspends examination of Syrian political asylum applications

President, Nikos Christodoulides, has announced the suspension of the examination of applications for political asylum for all applicants of Syrian origin.

"Due to the recent mass arrival of Syrian applicants for political asylum via the sea route, and pending developments on the issue of the re-evaluation of the Syrian regime, the examination of asylum applications in all cases of persons of Syrian origin is suspended," President Christodoulides wrote on his official account on platform “X”.

Moreover, in a press release on 14 April the Ministry of Interior also said that "on the implementation of a new policy in relation to the management of Syrian asylum seekers, due to the recent mass arrival of Syrian political asylum seekers by sea, and pending developments on the issue of the  re-evaluation of Syria's regime and the designation of safe areas, the examination of asylum applications for all cases of persons of Syrian origin is suspended."
