UN Special Rapporteur on Environmental Defenders visits Cyprus

UN Special Rapporteur on Environmental Defenders under the Aarhus Convention Michel Forst is paying Cyprus a visit at the invitation of the Ministry of the Environment.

According to an official press release, the purpose of his visit is to raise awareness about his role at the international level, but also about Cyprus' obligations arising from the Convention regarding the protection of environmental defenders and the principles of the Convention.

The official will hold a meeting with Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maria Panayiotou, during which they will discuss issues related to the protection of the environmental defenders and better implementation of the provisions of the Aarhus Convention.

He will also hold a meeting with Minister of Justice and Public Order, Marios Hartsiotis, and attend the session of the House Committee on the Environment that will take place on Wednesday, 7 February. 

The Special Rapporteur will hold a series of meetings behind closed doors with representatives of local non-governmental organisations and other organisations including the Federation of Environmental Organisations of Cyprus, independent citizens' groups and environmental institutions.

On Thursday, 8 February he will be the keynote speaker at a conference organised by the Department of the Environment, in collaboration with the Office of the Commissioner for the Environment, the Department of Law of the University of Cyprus, and the Federation of Environmental Organisations of Cyprus.
