€6.6 million photovoltaic systems installed at 405 Cypriot schools

With a total expenditure of €6.6 million, the project to install Photovoltaic Systems in 405 school buildings in Cyprus has been completed, offering significant energy savings to schools and reducing by 30% the total energy consumption.

These figures were released during a 31 January press conference, in Nicosia, on the occasion of the completion of the project to install Photovoltaic Systems in Public Schools.

The press conference was addressed by the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth Dr. Athena Michaelidou, and the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC), Despina Panayiotou Theodosiou.

Theodosiou said that with EAC's know-how and experience and in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, EAC installed photovoltaic systems in almost all schools in Cyprus.

She stated that the project included the installation of PV systems, with a total power of 4.9 MW, thermal insulation of approximately 84,000 square metres and waterproofing of the surfaces where the PV systems were installed.

On her part, the Minister of Education, Dr. Athena Michaelidou, stated that the installation of Photovoltaic Systems in 405 schools throughout Cyprus is an important step for the energy-sustainable future of the country, a necessity which, as she said, is communicated in the most effective way to children and our young people, through the specific action of the EAC and the Ministry of Education.

In the context of the holistic upgrading of public schools and the intended reconstruction of our educational system, said the Minister, the project of installing Photovoltaic Systems, which is part of the 2030 National Strategic Planning for Education and Sustainable Development.

The project of installing Photovoltaic Systems, Michaelidou said, was implemented following an agreement signed in November 2019 between the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth and the Electricity Authority of Cyprus.
