Poland takes over the presidency of the Council of the European Union for the second time on 1 January 2025, 13 years after the first Polish presidency and over 20 years after joining the EU in May 2004 along with Cyprus, Malta, Czechia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia and Slovenia.

Poland forms, together with Denmark and Cyprus, the so-called trio of presidencies during the coming 18 months

According to the Polish EU Presidency’s website, Poland presents an ambitious presidency programme, the main goal of which is to implement the priorities set around the topic of security, also emphasising the special role of civil society.

In terms of its priorities, the Polish presidency states it will support activities strengthening European security in its many dimensions, such as external, internal, information, economic, energy, food, and health.

It is added that the Polish presidency coincides with the beginning of the institutional cycle, which provides an opportunity to set goals, suggest solutions and start processes for the next five years.

As noted, Poland forms together with Denmark and Cyprus the so-called trio of presidencies during the coming 18 months.

As stated, the programme of the trio is organised around the themes of a Strong and Secure Europe, which refers to external actions, security and defence, migration and border protection, enlargement and internal reforms, a Prosperous and Competitive Europe, which deals with various components that make up competitiveness, twin transition, innovation, environment and social affairs, and a Free and Democratic Europe, which contains references to EU values such as rule of law and human rights.

The official opening gala of the Polish presidency will be hosted by the Polish National Opera in Warsaw on 3 January, 2025.
