National contest to elect Cyprus' best sommelier coming up

The Cyprus Sommeliers Association (Cy Somms) is organising the 10th National Contest for the Best Sommelier of Cyprus, on 25-26 November 2024, at Amathus Hotel in Limassol.

The National Contest for the Best Sommelier of Cyprus, which is organised every two years, is being held under the auspices of the Mayor of Amathus, Kyriakos Xydias, and the International Association of Sommeliers (ASI). The winner of the Contest will represent Cyprus in international contests organised by the ASI.

Cyprus has 13 candidates competing for the prestigious title. Only active members of the Cy Somms have the right to participate in the National Contest.

This is the 10th National Contest for the Best Sommelier in Cyprus in the association’s 23-year history. It is held in two phases: The first – closed to the public – will be held on 25 November and will reveal the three best contestants who will advance to the final phase. The second and final phase will be held in the Ballroom of Amathus Hotel, in the presence of the public, on 26 November, where the Best Sommelier of Cyprus will be selected. Finally, after congratulating the winner, a champagne reception and a formal dinner shall follow at 7.30pm in Amathus Hotel’s Thalassa restaurant.

The competition will be judged by jury of experienced judges and former national champions.

The Cyprus Sommeliers Association was founded in July 2001 in Limassol. Its members are professionals from the hotel and catering industry, academics, wine journalists, oenologists.

The Association develops any kind of activity that contributes to the promotion of wine knowledge and culture and the consumption of wine and any other alcoholic beverage.

Cy Somms is a member of A.S.I. (Association de la Sommellerie Internationale), since 2003. In November 2021, after two postponements due to the pandemic, the Association organised the Best Sommelier Europe & Africa Contest in Limassol with great success, where over 30 Professional sommeliers competed for the prestigious title of Best Sommelier of European and Africa.
