4th consortium meeting held in Larnaka for zero-emissions vessel project
12:14 - 10 October 2024

The 4th consortium meeting of the Zero Emission Sea Transporter (ZEST), a zero-emissions vessel to address the decarbonisation challenges of the local coastal fleet of Cyprus, took place recently to discuss progress made.
The Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI), as Host Organisation, said ZEST’s overall objectives align perfectly with its Research and Innovation Mission ‘to make the sustainable BlueEconomy carbon-neutral’.
The consortium met at CMMI’s premises in Larnaka and also had the opportunity to visit the vessel at Larnaka Marina.

“We envision that a realistic solution for short-sea routes is a fully electric vessel where batteries are charged from RES monitored and controlled by an innovative power and energy management system coupled with its digital twin,” CMMI has said. “The project’s main outcome will be a testbed and a proof that such design & build activities are possible in Cyprus, using national knowhow of industrial and research organisations.”
The role of CMMI as Host Organisation is to undertake the overall coordination of the project and ensure its timely, high-quality and successful delivery, including its technical development, demonstration, dissemination and commercialisation aspects, while satisfying the reporting and performance indicators set by the Research and Innovation Foundation. CMMI is responsible for the technoeconomic assessment of the proposed retrofits and the development of a software platform for the environmental footprint monitoring based on life-cycle analysis.
The Project CODEVELOP-GT/0322/0029 is funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU, through the Research and Innovation Foundation, with a total project cost of €557,324.
