Manager, TP Services, EY Cyprus: Opportunities for professional development in Cyprus

Originally from Kazakhstan, Yernar Fazylov also worked in the Czech Republic before relocating to Cyprus and is enjoying his time here but admits being someone from a more fast-paced environment meant it took him a while to fully embrace the local lifestyle.

Describe your current job in Cyprus.

My job includes developing and implementing transfer pricing strategies and policies for multinational corporations, which entails aligning their operating models with global tax strategies to ensure compliance with the applicable tax laws and regulations.

What led to your move from Kazakhstan to Cyprus?

From a professional perspective, Cyprus has a well-developed financial and tax system, which makes it an attractive location for businesses and individuals. This, in turn, creates steady demand for tax professionals who can help international business players to navigate complex tax laws and regulations in the region. From a personal perspective, I just couldn’t resist the idea of waking up to the sound of waves crashing on the shore, breathing in fresh sea air and enjoying the Mediterranean island lifestyle.

How does the professional environment in Cyprus differ from that in Kazakhstan?

I find the working environment in Cyprus to be more relaxed and informal with a strong emphasis on building personal relationships and networking.

How do you view the business environment in your particular industry?

Overall, the business environment for tax professionals in Cyprus is well-developed, with a range of opportunities for professional development, networking and collaboration.

How do you find working and living in Cyprus? How easily did you adapt to life here?

Cyprus is a great place to live and work, with a good quality of life, beautiful scenery and a welcoming culture. The hospitality and warmth of the local people, along with the widespread use of English language, certainly contributed to the adaptation process. Yet, it may need some practice and patience for someone from a more fast-paced environment to fully embrace the local lifestyle.
