Student residence halls to rejuvenate Old Nicosia

Nicosia Municipality is over the coming weeks anticipated to request tenders for the creation of student residence halls in Voulgaroktonou, Arsinois and Komninou streets in Old Nicosia.

The sites encompass eight consecutive buildings covering 1,685 square metres and the contract is anticipated to stand at a value of €4 million.

In combination with the renovation of Phaneromenis School and the relication of the University of Cyprus’ School of Architecture to the area, the new residence halls are anticipated to give new life to the old city.

The tender process is expected to be announced through the e-procurement online system.

The seven buildings consist of load-bearing stone/brick masonry and a wooden roof and the eighth has a load-bearing body of reinforced concrete columns, beams and slabs.

Among other things, the works will include demolitions, clearing, rehabilitation/restoration and extension with new metal structures to transform the one-story and/or two-story houses into student housing.

The project is anticipated to be complete 16 months after its starting date and may be eligible for funding through the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Mechanism in the context of the NextGenerationEU programme.
