Government employment down an annual 3.3% in February

Government employment in February decreased by 1,763 persons (or -3.3%) compared with the corresponding month of 2022, reaching 51,939 persons, according to data released by the Cyprus Statistical Service.

The decline was attributed to the transfer of Hourly Paid Workers from the Ministry of Health to the State Health Services Organisation, as of January 2023. Permanent staff decreased by 714 persons (-2.7%), from 26,130 to 25,416 persons. Casual staff increased by 666 persons (3.5%) and reached 19,945 persons, compared with 19,279 persons in February 2022.

A decrease was observed in Hourly Paid Workers (-20.7%) and all permanent personnel categories, whereas there was an increase in all casual personnel categories. The main changes were observed in Civil Service staff, both in permanent staff (down -2.9%) and in casual (up 5.7%).

Compared to January 2023, the main changes were observed in casual Educational Service staff (decrease -1.2%) and in casual Civil Service staff (increase 0.7%).
