Road tax renewals for 2024 to begin 4 January

Road tax renewals for the year 2024 will begin on 4 January, the Road Transport Department (RTD) has announced.

The last day to renew and avoid a penalty is 10 March 2024 at midnight. Road tax can be renewed for a period of three, six, nine or 12 months.

According to the RTD, the penalty for missing the deadline is €10 plus 10% of the road tax due. Also, to renew their road tax, drivers must have insurance and MOT.

The department advises against leaving it to the last minute as this could potentially lead to the system being overloaded and creating unnecessary hassle.

Those who do not intend to renew their road tax for 2024 must notify the RTD that the vehicle will be immobilised. This can be done online on the department’s website, as well physically at the department. Otherwise, they will still be obliged to pay the tax, whether the car is being used or not.

In addition, the RTD states that vehicles that have not had their road tax renewed for the year 2023 and have not been declared as immobilised will be removed from the RTD register. Also, if a car is destroyed, the owner must cancel its registration with the RTD, filling in a relevant form (RTD 98A) and attaching a certificate issued by licensed vehicle waste treatment facilities, to exempt the vehicle owner from the obligation to pay road tax from the date of destruction of the vehicle.

Road tax can be renewed throughout the year at the district Citizens Centres, Cyprus Post offices and RTDs.

It is noted that the department no longer sends out reminders so vehicle owners must make sure to keep on top of their dues.
