Representing Cyprus on the premier European Cyber Security stage, Team Cyprus demonstrated exceptional technical skills and operational readiness during the European Cyber Security Challenge (ECSC) 2026.
Cultivating national cybersecurity expertise among youth is an imperative for national defense and digital economic resilience. The European Cyber Security Challenge (ECSC), a flagship initiative by the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA), provides a pan-European platform to benchmark emerging talent, evaluate advanced threat-mitigation capabilities, and foster cross-border intelligence sharing.
During ECSC 2026 in Bochum, Germany, Team Cyprus achieved great performance metrics across two distinct competition formats against 42 competing national teams from European Member States and guest nations across the world. Demonstrating high-level tactical resilience, Cyprus secured the 24th place out of the 42 participating countries in the overall global placement.
Team Cyprus & Mentorship Framework
Achieving high-level operational performance in pan-European Capture the Flag (CTF) arenas demands rigorous preparation, specialized domain knowledge, and disciplined team dynamics. Structured mentorship provides the foundation for transforming promising technical minds into elite defense specialists.
The national selection was executed through the Cyprus Cyber Security Challenge (CCSC) 2026, held online from August 2 to 9, 2026. The selection process fielded ten top-performing talents comprising high school students, university students, researchers, self-taught security specialists and young professionals aged 14 to 25.
These are: Marios Kailis (Team Leader), Christos Falas, Joseph Modestou, Christodoulos Sotiriou, Stylianos Anastasiou, Alexandros Poullas, George Voutouris, George Mavronicolas, Stylianos Stylianou, Evangelos Lioudakis
The national team’s support and preparation was led jointly by the Cyprus Computer Society (CCS) and the volunteer mentors of the CyberMouflons Cybersecurity Group. Drawing from academia and industry, CyberMouflons mentors designed advanced training environments, simulated real-time Attack-Defense scenarios, and coached the roster in CTF methodologies to ensure peak readiness for the European finals.
Ecosystem Synergy
Robust multi-agency public governance is essential to align early workforce initiatives with national cybersecurity objectives and critical infrastructure defense priorities.
The participation of Team Cyprus in ECSC 2026 was conducted under official government auspices and multi-ministerial endorsements. These were the Office of the Commissioner of Communications through the Digital Security Authority (DSA), the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth and the Cyprus Police.
Public-private partnerships are vital in securing necessary resources for the international competition. Team Cyprus was supported by leading enterprise partners, academic institutions, and cybersecurity firms (in alphabetical order) Deloitte, European University Cyprus, Frederick University, Grant Thornton, Odyssey Cybersecurity, Qsecure and XM.
