“The joint venture brings together the complementary strengths, expertise and maritime heritage of InterMaritime and Carsten Rehder, combining strong local market knowledge and project development expertise with InterMaritime’s international resources and global network,” Dieter Rohdenburg, Chief Executive Officer, InterMaritime Shipmanagement Ltd. notes.
In a recent interview with CBN on the occasion of the landmark agreement, Rohdenburg also weighs in on the current challenges being experienced by the shipping sector on a global scale and their impact on Cyprus.
InterMaritime Shipmanagement and Carsten Rehder have announced their strategic ship management joint venture. Can you tell us more about the practical implications of the agreement and how your clients will benefit?
The joint venture brings together the complementary strengths, expertise and maritime heritage of InterMaritime and Carsten Rehder, combining strong local market knowledge and project development expertise with InterMaritime’s international resources and global network. The business will operate under the InterMaritime Shipmanagement name and logo, providing technical management for a fleet of approximately 20 vessels, alongside crew management services for additional vessels.
For our clients, the agreement means access to broader expertise, enhanced recruitment capabilities and an expanded international network of qualified seafarers. It also strengthens our ability to build long-term partnerships with shipowners, deliver reliable, high-quality services and support the evolving needs of our customers. Importantly, continuity of service remains a priority throughout the transition, ensuring that clients and business partners continue to receive the support they expect while benefiting from the opportunities created by the combined strengths of both organisations.
Is this exciting new agreement anticipated to impact your activities in Cyprus in any way, either in terms of additional staff or facilities?
The joint venture is primarily focused on strengthening our presence in Germany and Northern Europe, with Hamburg serving as its headquarters. However, as part of the wider InterMaritime Group, the partnership further strengthens our international network and creates opportunities for collaboration across our offices. At this stage, the focus is on ensuring a smooth integration and building a strong foundation for future growth. Any further developments in terms of staffing or facilities will be considered in line with the evolving needs of the business.
More widely, given the current challenges being experienced by the shipping sector on a global scale, what is your view of the sector at this time, both on a more localised level involving Cyprus and on a global level?
The shipping industry continues to face significant challenges, from geopolitical uncertainty and disruptions to trade routes to increasing regulatory requirements. However, shipping has always demonstrated resilience and an ability to adapt. These challenges also create opportunities for ship managers with the scale, expertise and resources to respond effectively. Through economies of scale, broader networks and specialised capabilities, larger ship management companies are often better positioned to navigate complexity, manage risks and deliver efficient, reliable services to shipowners.
As for Cyprus, it remains an important maritime hub, supported by its strong shipping community and international expertise. We believe that companies which remain flexible, invest in their people and maintain high service standards will be best positioned to navigate the challenges ahead and take advantage of new opportunities.
Further to the above, are joint ventures such as the one that has just been announced a way forward towards the sector overcoming its current challenges?
Strategic partnerships and joint ventures can play an important role in strengthening the industry. By bringing together complementary expertise, resources and market knowledge, companies can enhance their capabilities, expand their reach and respond more effectively to changing client needs. Ultimately, collaboration allows us to build on our respective strengths, create new opportunities for growth and deliver greater value to our clients.
