“I never thought that my hobby could become my career,” Film and TV Director Andreas Sheittanis said on Wednesday at INSPIRE 2026’s Future of Work stage, reflecting on his career and the international opportunities available to creators.
Speaking about how a career in film can become international, Sheittanis said the world has changed, with international markets showing greater interest in foreign cultures and stories.
Different cultures, he said, can “open people’s eyes to another world”, while audiences are increasingly interested in learning about the experiences and perspectives of others.
Asked what makes a topic worth covering, Sheittanis said creators should focus on subjects that genuinely interest them.
“Something that is of interest to you is something that you pour passion into,” he said, adding that a project must be engaging for its creator, who may spend a significant amount of time bringing their vision to life.
Sheittanis also discussed his documentary Pleiades, which explores the victims of Cyprus’ first serial killer. He said the project approached the case from a human perspective, focusing on the stories of those involved while also seeking to portray the human side of the authorities investigating the case.
