The Municipality of Nicosia has prepared a package of proposals that will contribute to the revitalisation of the Makarios Avenue area, which will be presented to the Municipal Council during its upcoming meetings, Nicosia Mayor Charalambos Prountzos has said.
A Municipality announcement regarding a recent visit to the Municipality by a delegation of the political party DISY states that Prountzos, after thanking the delegation for the visit and the interest shown, referred to the Municipality's two-year report, the projects currently underway, the financial situation, the significant challenges facing the city, and the impacts arising from the fact that Nicosia is a semi-occupied city.
"Special reference was made to the financial data of the Municipality. Specifically, the minimum real needs of the new Municipality amount to €35 million, against a state grant of €22.5 million for the period 2025-2026," it added.
At the same time, the announcement continues, the Mayor analysed the Municipality's development plan, while referring in particular to the SOPAZ area and the opportunities that may arise, speaking of the city's largest development project and possibly the largest in Cyprus.
The Mayor also stressed the importance of creating a metropolitan park at the State Fairgounds site, underlining that the Engomi Municipal District and the entire West Nicosia must acquire its own green lung.
"The issue of Makarios Avenue was raised for discussion during the meeting, with the Mayor clarifying that the Municipality has prepared a package of proposals that will contribute to the revitalisation of the area. The package will be placed before the Municipal Council during its upcoming meetings," it is noted.
At the same time, he expressed the expectation for support from the Government and the competent authorities, following a meeting held at the Presidential Palace, in which he participated together with the Deputy Mayor of Nicosia. "Support from the parliamentary parties will also be important for the adoption of revitalisation measures that require the approval of Parliament," the announcement added.
According to the announcement, on its part, DISY's Nicosia parliamentary group recorded the problems and suggestions of the members of the Nicosia Municipal Council, such as the issue of state sponsorship to municipalities, the institution of the Neighborhood Police and the traffic issue facing the capital on specific avenues during peak hours.
