Cyprus EU Presidency highlighted country's role as EU-Middle East bridge, Nicosia says

The Cyprus Presidency of the EU highlighted Cyprus’ distinctive geopolitical role as a bridge between the European Union, the Middle East and the wider region, the Presidency of the Republic of Cyprus said in a post on Monday.

“Cyprus, as an honest broker among the 27 Member States, demonstrated through consistency, credibility and a commitment to the common European interest that the size of a country does not determine the role it can play within the European Union,” the Presidency said in its post which is accompanied by a spot showcasing key moments during the presidency.

It noted that Cyprus’ EU Presidency coincided with a period of “unprecedented geopolitical uncertainty” and major challenges for Europe, during which Cyprus was called upon to address complex issues, promote solutions and contribute to critical decision-making among the Member States.

The Cyprus Presidency, it added, placed Cyprus at the centre of European affairs, “strengthening the credibility and political capital of the Republic of Cyprus and enhancing the country’s position at both European and international level.”

At the same time, it highlighted Cyprus’ “distinctive geopolitical role” as a bridge between the European Union, the Middle East and the wider region, the Presidency concludes.

Cyprus held the Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2026.
